Companies House identity checks

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, Companies House is being given powers to improve the accuracy of the register, reduce misuse of UK companies and strengthen confidence in company information. To assist with this, identity verification began rolling out from 18 November 2025.

This is a significant change in how company information is managed and how businesses interact with Companies House.

For many years, Companies House has operated as a filing registry and now the aim is to make the register more reliable by ensuring that the people are who they say they are. The hope is that it should help tackle fraud, reduce abuse of corporate structures and improve trust in the UK business environment.

For genuine business owners, this means a greater compliance burden but it should also mean a more credible company register.

The new rules are relevant to:

For many small business owners, this may be the first time they have had to go through a formal identity verification process in connection with their company responsibilities. Businesses can prepare by reviewing their company records and confirming who is acting as a director, who qualifies as a PSC and who is responsible for filing documents. It is important to know exactly which individuals will fall within the new requirements.

Any inconsistencies in names, addresses, dates of birth or appointment details may create complications. Now is a good time to review the information already held at Companies House and correct anything inaccurate.

At Dominic Hill Chartered Accountants, we are an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). This means we can undertake the identity checks on behalf of our clients. That can be especially helpful for busy directors and small business owners who want reassurance that the checks are being handled correctly and in line with the new requirements.

If you would like support with identity verification or would like to understand how the Companies House reforms affect your business, Dominic Hill Chartered Accountants can help.
